چکیده

THE left-to-right shunts found in small atrial or ventricular septal defects or in patent ductus arteriosus are easily demonstrated during cardiac catheterization by both rightand left-sided approaches.' Efforts to evaluate shunting due to these defects without cardiac catheterization have depended on measurements of the cardiac output curves obtained by various external counting technics.Y Because the external monitoring sites are relatively distant from the circulating radioisotope, the descending slope of the curve is influenced by factors other than the shunt itself.8 In an attempt to de-emphasize these extraneous factors a new approach has been developed utilizing the esophagus as an avenue for positioning a miniature Geiger-Muller tube as a detector immediately adjacent to the left atrium and much closer to the radioisotope circulating through the heart. Radioisotope curves then monitor recirculation shunts in more concentrated form from the left atrium than from externally placed precordial, pulmonary, or peripheral counters.

Contrast Enhanced Echocardiography for Detection of Intrapulmonary Shunts in Liver Transplant Candidates

Background: Intrapulmonary vascular abnormalities associated with liver cirrhosis may result in intrapulmonary right-to-left shunt and hypoxemia. The aim of this study was to use contrast enhanced echocardiography to detect intrapulmonary vascular abnormalities in patients with liver cirrhosis candidates for liver transplantation. Methods: One hundred and two adult patients underwent contrast e...

A New Sensitive Technic for the Detection of Small Cardiac Shunts

0NE of the difficult problems in cardiac catheterization is the identification and localization of small left-to-right shunts. This is particularly trying with small residual shunts following intracardiac surgery. It is recognized that standard oximetry, indicator-dilution curves with injection into the right heart, and right-sided angiocardiography are not sensitive enough to identify small le...

A Simplified Technic for the Detection of Patent Ductus Arteriosus and of Other Left-to-Right Shunts Originating from the Aorta

THE PRESENCE of an isolated patent ductus arteriosus can generally be determined by clinical examination. However, the differentiation of patent ductus arteriosus from the more unusual left-to-right shunts originating from the aorta is notoriously difficult, and in the presence of an associated intracardiac shunt the recognition of a patent ductus arteriosus may not be possible even by means of...
